Smelly drainage coming out of my 2 year olds ear?

My two year old son has had drainage coming out of his ears for about 3 weeks. He has tubes in his ears. Now the drainage has become very smelly. He doesn't have a fever but does stick his finger in his ears often. Is this an ear infection? I am not sure what to think. Has anyone else had this problem?
