X-Men fans only! Question about Polaris' red/gold costume?

Okay I was wondering this question for years, how come she only wore it a couple of issues. I thought it looked great and empowering when i saw it on the Wizard cover (i forgot which one, but it had Rogue, storm, and jean grey. maybe issue 34ish) and in X-Men series 2 cards.
