Can you grow prickly pear cactus from the fruit itself?

Hello there, on a trip to northern Cyprus i brought back a prickly pear cactus fruit, it was green and had fallen off. i brought it back and put it into a pot to grow. no luck, so i used some rooting hormone on it to get it started, bingo! now it has a mive straight trunk 10 inches tall out the the side of the fruit with prickles and other cylindrical shaped leaves sticking out all the way up! This is not how i remember prickly pear cacti looking.... no sign of a pad anywhere! any ideas guys? help much appreciated :D
